Two things that might be going on. First, I think it can be a cultural thing, where people who are not directly involved aren't expected to be focused on the game. Nothing wrong with that if it works for your group. Second, it can be a sign of disengagement or discomfort, which sucks. I think both of these can be fixed with communication. You want a game where everybody is engaged all the time, right? Figure out together what that means in play and strive for that, and insist that everyone at the table work with you. That's my thought on it.

Clinton's comment about the "guy with his head in the magazine" really hit home. I can't recall ANY game I've been in since, oh, 1992 when this wasn't the case. Sometimes I was that guy.

Sometimes have one of 2 nightmares. One is where I'm still at school and it's the last day of classes and I have totally forgotten to do any of the work or go to any of the labs and I am totally going to fail that class. The other dream is where I'm running a game and the players are just sitting there, looking at me with no emotion, just blank stares.

I've never really lived through the first one, but I've suffered in real life through the second.
