Podcast #42

Aaaand we’re back!  We continue to play In A Wicked Age with Monica, and talk about how games end.  Short games, long games, explicit end conditions, open-ended campaigns - how do you know when you’re done?

  • Great to have you guys back!

I found the conversation about gaming endings quite topical as I was just playing a one-shot of Best Friends this week and there was debate at the table and on S-G the next day about meta-structure and “when was the game *supposed* to end?”

Monica is spot on with her observation regarding “oh, it’s about time to wrap up for the night, let’s push this last scene to eleven!” Personally I think it can go either way. Sometimes this dynamic feels like a forced ending to a game that could have gone on longer or perhaps to a second session (which isn’t always possible unless you have a stable group). But sometimes it focuses the table on bringing all of the issues to the forefront *now* and not letting the next few scenes drift off into meh-land. Because there aren’t any “next scenes”.

  • First, you take a break from the show.
Then, you title the new episode Endings.
Then, you start the show talking about the end of the podcast.

    Eeeeevil.

Very enjoyable show, y’all. I really dig how Monica pushes you into new conversations. She is very perceptive. The show is more open to new gamers when she is on. Good stuff all around.

You guys need to have an open marathon game, invite listeners to sit in, you kick it off and players can tap out, then a fresh player steps into the role. One weekend-long game.

    Keep up the great work.

  • Hey, Rich!
    Yeah, Monica’s great.

If we ever run a weekend-long endurathon, it’ll be an epic GoPlay-type thing with people from EVERYWHERE.

It may have to happen. It may be just crazy enough to work.
